There is a jd 650 in the local paper-says low hrs,comes with brush hog and boxblade,is also 4x4 for $5,900 does this sound like it's worth checking on?I just bought 8.8 acres and will be buying my 1st tractor in the next few months at the latest.I will be mostly brush hogging and eventually will want a loader.Will also be used to clean up behind horses eventually.The terrian is mostly pasture with a few narrow run-off ditches.With about .5 acer of trees and saplings that needs some thining.The siol is a mixture of mostly sand and clay very slick when wet (I rented a L3010 and would get stuck if not in 4x4 almost instantly and even came close to getting stuck in 4x4 on flat ground on the next day after it rained 1" or so the night before.)It takes this property a while to dry even though it has pretty good run off...What would be considered low hr's for an early 90's model...?If I like the feed back I may call the fella and see if he still has it...Thanks for any help.... Since you mention the extensive need for using a rotary cutter, I would carefully check out the specs on the 650. Somewhere I think I saw the specs and I think that the PTO HP is very minimal for running say a 48" cutter. I'm not certain about this, but I would certainly first check out the implements you need, then see what tractor specs you need to run the implement. I think you can find out the 650 specs at www.tractortips.com ....

Jim,ipmlement ability is deffenitly a concern.I used a 30hp orange fella this past weekend and it took the most of 2days to do the job.It was farely damp on day one and purty much wet on day2 it rained an 1" or so sat-night.This with a 5' brush hog.The under growth was aslo about 1' tall and the dead brush about 5'but very dry and britle.Though I dont plan to let get that bad again stuff happens......

The 650 is a two cylinder 14 hp (pto) tractor. I have a spec sheet on it and will get back to you with the recommended mower size. This tractor may be a little small for your 15ac. ....

4ft Rotary cutter is recommended for the 650. Great tractor but may be somewhat of a compromise size wise. I purchased a 86 2WD with 189 hours on it last fall. The tractor is in incredible condition and I would consider 189 hours low. ....

I've had a 4WD JD 650 with loader, JD 550 (?) rototiller, 5 ft boxblade, and a posthole digger for about a year. I have one rolling acre with clay and a few rocks. The tractor has done everything I have asked of it, but I would consider it too small for the situation you describe. The problem is that with this small and low powered (14.5 pto) a tractor, you have to do everything (except finish mowing) just a bit slower than you would with some more weight and power. I'd keep all my implements, but I'd want about 25 hp if I had your situation. I personally find a gear tractor to be fine for my uses, but if you're going to spend a lot of time with the loader, or going around trees, etc, mowing, a hydro would be very nice. The 650 also does not have a two stage clutch, so every time you declutch you lose your mowing or tilling capability. ....
